The Department of Music, established in 1966, is based in the Conrad Prebys Music Center and places some emphasis on education and innovation in new music. The Center for Research and Computing in the Arts conducts activities which include the design and fabrication of new types of musical instruments, the exploration of new ways to use existing instruments and the investigation of new types of musical structures through formal and improvisatory techniques. Facilities include a state-of-the-art computer music instructional laboratory, a digital music recording studio complex and some fine performing spaces. A carillon is located above the university library. Member of the University of California system.
