Institution Notes:

The University was founded in 1897. Facilities include the 300-seat Dayton Smith recital hall, a state-of-the-art electronic music studio, 160 pianos, three harpsichords and 800 other instruments, many of ethnic origin. There is an active opera program. The University hosts a Community Music School offering music tuition to children and interested members of the local community. The Community Council for Music in the Schools is a non-profit organisation founded in 1990 under the umbrella of the San Diego State University Foundation. Its purpose is to promote and support music education in public schools and to work in partnership with music organisations in the private sector that provide music enrichment to students. It also collects and repairs donated instruments which are issued to school music teachers for loan to needy students who are unable to rent or purchase an instrument.
