A private liberal arts college for women founded in 1852. In 1871 it was granted the name Mills College in 1865 and in 2022 it joined forces with the Boston-based Northeastern University to become the Mills Institute at Northeastern University, Oakland. It becomes co-educational at the graduate level. The library houses an extensive collection of the compositions of Darius Milhaud and a large collection of tapes of first performances of experimental music from the 1950s to the present. The Center for Contemporary Music within the music department has a recording studio and offers innovative programs in sound synthesis and in electro-acoustic and computer music performance. Composition programs have always included experiments in the creation of new instruments, particularly in the electronic area.
