A private university established in 1880. The School of Music, founded in 1884, is organised into three divisions - Classical Performance and Composition, Contemporary Music, and Reseach & Scholarly Studies. It has access to a number of fine performance and rehearsal spaces. The music library houses the Bickford Collection of guitar music and the archives of composers Ingolf Dahl and Rayner Brown. The Arnold Schoenberg Institute houses the library and memorabilia of Arnold Schoenberg. The Polish Music Centre is a music library and research centre devoted to Polish music. It houses over 10,000 items, including an extensive collection of manuscripts by such composers as Łutoslawski, Penderecki and Bacewicz as well as books, scores, dissertations, journals and recordings of Polish music. It publishes an annual Polish Music Journal and organises concerts and other music-related events. There is a cantorial music program offered in collaboration with the Los Angeles branch of Hebrew Union College (New York), through the University’s Department of Sacred Music. An Outreach Program takes student majors in classical and jazz performance, composition, music industry and music education into local schools to offer music opportunities to children.
