Institution Notes:

The Conservatorio can trace its history back to 1583 with the establishment of four orphanages. It gained its current name and status in 1826. The library holds a number of autograph copies of manuscripts of Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Paisiello, Cimarosa, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi. The Conservatorio's museum has a collection of early violins, many made in the Neapolitan school of violin making, and including one of Stradivari, bows and guitar picks, the fortepiano and harpsichord of Catherine II of Russia as well as the pianos of Mercadante and Thalberg. There is a preparatory program for students wishing to enter the professional program. The Conservatorio offers music tuition to children and interested members of the local community. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
