The Conservatorio, established in 1807, is among the largest in Italy and is regarded as equivalent to a university. It houses a number of specialist laboratories - choral singing, improvisation, wind orchestra, contemporary music, 18th century vocal music, world music, and an interdisciplinary laboratory for music and performing arts. The Conservatorio offers a preparatory program for students wishing to enter the professional program, and offers evening courses in music to interested members of the public. There is an attached secondary school that offers music training using staff members of the Conservatorio. The library holds a series of letters written by Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi and Arrigo Boito. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
